Salvation Army Food Drive
Brickton Montessori is once again participating in the Salvation Army Holiday Food Drive.  Boxes for food donations will be placed in the school lobby when we return from the Thanksgiving holiday.  A list of suggested non-perishable holiday food items will be posted outside each classroom and on the donation box.
Quaker Dance
A longstanding Thanksgiving tradition here at Brickton - the Quaker Dance - is a time for our students to come together and celebrate being a community.  Enjoy the video!

Friendship Soup
Each year at this time, the Children’s House students come together to make Friendship Soup.  Each child’s family donates an ingredient and the students help in the preparation.  It is a wonderful activity that teaches the students the value of cooperation and community.

Human Body Museum
The Upper Elementary students have been studying body systems.  In culmination, each student created working exhibits to show how different senses and parts of the body work.  The Children’s House and Lower Elementary students visited the Upper Elementary classroom to experience these amazing exhibits.

Lost and Found Table
We have arranged the lost and found items on a table right next to the front door.  Please take a moment to see if your child might have something they lost and we found!

The Brickton Weekly, November 22, 2013

Getting to Know You: Each week this section will highlight one staff member and their answer to the question: How do you express your creativity?
Pat Moran, Children’s House Assistant
I'm creative many ways since I love to draw, paint, sew, quilt, crochet, bake and cook. I'm a Pinterest addict, always looking for something new to try. I also enjoy sharing all my creative interests with the children at school and my grandsons. It gives me great satisfaction to see a child light up when he/she is creating their own artistic masterpiece. I have some of my son’s art work from his school years hanging on my walls at home. Over the years children have given me their pictures which I have also saved.  This year I will be working with my class to create a quilt for the Annual Benefit, which is February 15, 2014. I hope you'll be able to attend and see what great creative children we have at Brickton!
Thanksgiving Break
In recognition of Thanksgiving, Brickton is closed Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th.  Wednesday, November 27th is a Club Day at Brickton.  RSVP with Kelly to attend the Club Day.

Getting to Know You: Each week this section will highlight one staff member and their answer to the question: How do you express your creativity?
Erica Lane, Upper Elementary Directress
After thinking a long time about this question, I realized that I express my creativity through problem solving.  I think creative pursuits help people to relax and feel an inner sense of satisfaction.  I get this by solving problems of all kinds.  I enjoy helping people find creative solutions to classroom or scheduling conflicts.  I also like to work out puzzles and think logically.  I love designing my classroom each year and rearranging rooms in my home.  To relax at night, I even sit down to do some Sudoku puzzles before going to sleep.  I guess that is why I am such a fan of mathematics!

Congratulations to Steve and Donna Pollizze (parents of Jacob in room 103) who won the Annual Benefit contest for two free tickets to the Big Leap in February!

The Brickton Weekly, November 8, 2013

Getting to Know You: Each week this section will highlight one staff member and their answer to the question: How do you express your creativity?
Charles Martin, Middle School Director
I have always had a certain flare for the dramatic – even when I believed no one to be watching. In fact, as an auditory learner, I am often overheard talking to myself, processing new or difficult information or practicing and revising the delivery and wording of upcoming oratory adventures. Spoken language has always been my favorite muse. She flirts and teases in playfully suggestive ambiguity or imparts painful information with the exact precision of a veteran surgeon’s hands. Her vast potential has provided me a wide range of strategies that have allowed me to give devastating news with limited collateral damage or whip up a delightful frenzy of raucous laughter with little time for preparation during improvisation. Spoken language is an art that encompasses more than just words. It is a delicate balancing act where what is said must match how it is said – for the real message can often be found in the pauses.
Operation Candy is a Success
In just one day, students donated an astounding total of 100.3 lbs of candy to our troops serving in Àfrica and in the Middle East in Operation Enduring Freedom. Thank you to Upper Elementary students, and especially Zach Contursi, who led the appeal and created the flyers. The treats were greatly appreciated upon arrival at Naval Station Great Lakes where the care packages were shipping out this week. Candy that melts was distributed to the USO of Illinois at O'Hare, one of the busiest centers in the US supporting active duty men and women and their families. The USO accepts donations of food and much more year-round.
Thank You Corner
We would like to extend a thank you to David Plier and Paul Lisnek for graciously hosting our Middle School students on field trips.
A round of applause goes to all the students and families that donated Halloween candy to the troops and to Shashona Chau and Janet Contursi for handling delivery.

Out and About!

Our Middle School students were out and about Chicago participating in a week's worth of immersion activities -- a week between study cycles devoted to learning outside of the classroom: extracurriculars, practical life skills, environmental education, service learning, etc. On Wednesday, October 16th, students traveled to WGN Television Studios where CLTV's "Politics Tonight" host and Brickton parent, Paul Lisnek, benevolently took time away from his busy day reporting on the Government Shut Down to lead the students on a behind-the-scenes tour of the famous studios that were once home to "Bozo the Clown." Students toured the light and sound rooms and learned about the many off-camera jobs that bring us the news multiple times daily. Students also learned about the history of the station as well as receiving the incredibly rare opportunity to watch the heavily protected Illinois Lottery numbers being drawn. The Middle School also had an opportunity to use the green screens and pose for pictures on several sets, including "Politics Tonight." Weekend meteorologist Jim Ramsey walked the students through his version of Meteorology 101, sharing the secrets of the unique tools used exclusively by men and women working in weather. Finally, the students had the exciting opportunity to meet WGN Midday News co-anchors Dina Bair and Steve Sanders, who allowed students to watch the newscast live from within the studio and took time afterward to pose for pictures and answer student questions. Just when the students thought it could not get better, the anchors surprised the students with an on-air mention and broadcast the elated students on national television during the newscast's fade-away.
The following, students were met by another Brickton parent, David Plier, at the the Museum of Broadcast Communications. David, who works in radio, and the entire Plier family have played integral roles in the growth and development of the historical museum. The tour helped the students gain new perspective and understanding in regard to WGN and its influence on Chicago. In addition to David's vast knowledge, the students had the chance to meet Bruce DuMont, founder and president of the museum. Bruce shared his inspiring story where he began with just $250 and a passion for protecting our history told through broadcasting.

Heather Wilcek, Lower Elementary Directress
I love music and I always have!  Whether I'm doing chores around the house, driving in the car, doing work for school or reading a book, you will probably hear music playing in the background.  I enjoy opportunities to go see live shows of all kinds.  In high school, I sang in the chorus and played the clarinet in the marching band.  If you ever need a playlist put together, I'm your girl!

Trick-or-Treat With UNICEF
In addition to all of the traditional Halloween fun, this year, the children are being asked to trick or treat for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund.  For 60 years UNICEF has provided money for improved nutrition, clean water, medications, vaccines, sanitation and educational supplies for children.  The students viewed a short video about UNICEF on Monday.  The “trick-or-treat” campaign is often a child’s first philanthropic experience and we are happy to take part in this endeavor. In your parent folder you will find an orange UNICEF box.  The children may bring these boxes with them when trick or treating and say, “trick or treat for UNICEF.”  Please return the boxes to your child’s Director/ess by November 6.  Thank you.
