Third year students are reading "fast and furious" to complete their Needs of People projects! Upper Elementary Literature Circles include two titles from Jerry Spinelli: Crash and Maniac McGee, while another group is enjoying Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger (Sachar).  Roald Dahl's The Witches is making for a fun read-aloud in their room as well. Brickton Reads
Lower E students are reading the Lyle, Lyle Crocodile books in preparation for their field trip to see the play.  Their Directress, Heather, is enjoying Nick Hornby's How to Be Good.  Parent Olina Dolly is reading Dan Brown's Inferno. Amelia Dolly and Sarah Degand have formed their own Book Buddy Book Club.  They are loving Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Maurusia Calderon is into non-fiction: specifically her United Airlines Training Manuals.  And other parents find that the only bedtime reading they can manage is what they read to the children....before all fall asleep!

ISACS/AIMS Wrap Up
The joint ISACS/AMS Accreditation Team wrapped up their work on Wednesday, announcing their recommendation for re-accreditation, stating they “depart with verification of your achievements and with confidence that Brickton will continue its extraordinary path”.  Thank you to the many individuals that made this a successful visit for Brickton – faculty, staff, board members, parent alliance, and parents – both current and alums, that put in many hours completing our self-study and participating in the accreditation visit.   It is a wonderful validation of the educational programs and community we have at Brickton!

Brickton Reads
April is National Poetry Month!  Be sure to celebrate by reading and recalling your favorite verses or borrow some from Brickton's Little Free Library. Book Buddy pairs are "perusing piles of poetry preparing for Poem In Your Pocket" celebration!  Favorite poets are Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky.  But classic poetry by Emily Dickinson, Lewis Carroll, and William Shakespeare are also on the short list!  The National Celebration of Poem in Your Pocket is April 24.
Karen Glab is just about to finish Never Go Back, a novel by Lee Child. Next on her list is I Michael Bennett by Michael Ledwidge. Karen says, "I usually like science fiction or historical novels, but these were books I came across at an estate sale, and I am really enjoying these two authors." Liz Skrodzki read and then gave Sara Gregory a library copy of Sue Monk Kidd's The Invention of Wings. It has exquisite writing but is gut wrenching. Andrea Ruth, one of our accreditation team visitors, is reading Mind Set by Carol Dweck.  It explores research on rigid/fixed versus dynamic/flexible thinking and outlines the benefits of teaching a "growth mindset."

Getting to Know You: Each week this section will highlight one staff member and their answer to the question: How do you express your creativity?
Jackie Toro, After School Coordinator
I express my creativity through reading and acting out stories with the children. I enjoy their reaction and excitement when they see what books I'm going to be reading on line in the Afterschool Program. I've taken multiple children's literature classes and decided this is my passion. I've even created my own ABC book.
Joint ISACS/AMS Accreditation Visit Next Week
Next Monday through Wednesday, a team of educators will be visiting Brickton to take part in our school’s joint ISACS/AMS accreditation.  The team will be observing classrooms and speaking with the staff, the board of directors, the Parent Alliance, and some of our students.  The purpose of this visit is to validate the self-study completed in October 2013 as part of our re-accreditation process with ISACS and AMS.
Thank You Corner
Dave Degand, father of James (Room 101) and Sarah (Room 105), spent a great deal of time installing ournew paper hanging system in the hallways to show student work.  Thanks, Dave.
