The Brickton Weekly, October 31, 2014

Thank You Corner
A big thank you is due to Joe Somers for providing his expert graphic design skills to the creation of the annual report and annual fund brochures.  Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends that participated in Trunk-or-Treating and supported classroom parties to make it a delightful Halloween for our community.
Halloween Slideshow
Our Halloween festivities started off with our traditional costume parade followed by trunk-or-treating.  Enjoy the slide show and Happy Halloween!
Extracurriculars Rescheduling
Two of our after school extracurricular classes are being rescheduled this week.  Future Hits Enrichment was cancelled on Monday, 10/27 and is being rescheduled for Monday, 11/17. Sports Club is cancelled on Friday, 10/31 and being rescheduled for Friday, 12/5.
Picture Retake & Sibling Photos – Wednesday, November 5th.
If you would like to have your child’s photo retaken or have sibling photos, please let Sara/Kelly know by calling or stopping in the office.  If your child has already had their photo taken, you will need to return your proof packet for the original photo as part of the retake process.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
In your parent folder you will find an orange UNICEF box.  The children may bring these boxes with them when trick or treating and say “trick or treat for UNICEF” to accept monetary donations.  For those parents accompanying their children, a gentle reminder to extend their little orange box after filling their bags with treats will make a real impact on the lives of children worldwide.  Please let Agnes Guerra in Room 101 know if you would like additional boxes for siblings. Please return the boxes to your child’s Directress or Director by November 6.
Make it a Halloween for our Heroes!
Donate your leftover candy to the USO for our troops! We will be collecting at school the week after Halloween, look out for special boxes. Last year, Brickton students donated 130 lbs of candy!
Club Day Friday, November 7th
Next Friday, November 7th is a Club Day at Brickton. All full day students may attend at no extra charge. Students in the Core or Half Day programs may attend if they are pre-registered and pre-paid in the amount of $50. So that we can arrange adequate staffing, please let Kelly know if your child will be attending.  You can email her at kelly.mcdermott@brickton.org.
Call for Book Donations
As part of the Illinois Family Reading Nights here at Brickton, the Middle School students are hosting a used book sale.  They already have a great selection of kids picture and chapter books and adult fiction and non-fiction titles, but they are asking for donations to help them round their selections.  If you have books to donate, you can leave them in the front office or in the Middle School classroom, Room 106. Stay tuned for details about the Reading Nights.

The Brickton Weekly, October 24, 2014

Thank You Corner
Thank you to Megan Bucaro (mother of TJ in Room 104) for helping with Operation Child Find which made the process run more smoothly for the children. Betty Boduch, mother of Malina (Upper Elementary) and Stefan (Children's House Rm. 101) has extended an invitation to attend a wonderful concert by the Del McCoury Band, honoring Woodie Guthrie, free of charge at The North Shore Center For The Performing Arts in Skokie tonight. Details can be found by following this link and remember to use the code "Betty" when calling to reserve your tickets! Thank you, Betty, for this unique opportunity!

Cross Country Update

On Monday, Brickton’s cross country team participated in a Montessori Tri-Meet with Rogers Park Montessori School and Chiaravalle Montessori School.  The students could choose to run in 1 or 2 mile races, and some opted to run in both! This was the last meet of the season and our runners did not hold back with many setting personal best times.  Great job Brickton runners!
School Picture Orders
Proofs of the school pictures have arrived and have been distributed to the parent folders.  Ordering is easy - simply go to the Inter-State website and enter your child's order code number. You can get creative - there are several choices of backgrounds and borders.
Picture Retake Day will be on Wednesday, November 5 for children who were absent on the first picture day and also for siblings.  If you were not satisfied with the first portrait, you can request a do-over.
Let the office know if you would like to have a sibling picture taken and also if you would like a retake.  If you would like a retake, the first set of proofs must be returned to the office.
Please call Sara, in the Main Office, if you have questions.
Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic Book Orders are back!  You have received Scholastic Books flyers with just a small selection of the great book and e-book choices available for your family. We encourage you to visit scholastic.com/bookclubs for customized recommendations, special collections, holiday books, and flyers for different ages and reading levels. It is very easy to set up an account, and when you order online, your classroom earns free books, audio library books, and free shipping!  There are always great values for your growing reader(s) or to give as gifts.
Books are conveniently sent directly to Brickton and distributed to classrooms when they arrive. See a letter in your parent folder for all the details.  The first due date is October 30th.
Brickton Reads
Brickton Parents know how important it is to have books at home and read daily. As you develop your home libraries, there are many valuable resources.  The Children's Book Council Joint Committee and the Quicklists Consulting Committee for the Association for Library Service to Children (a division of the American Library Association), can help with titles you and your children will love.
Brickton also has some resources for parents. Please take a look at the shelf across from the Frog Tank in the school lobby.  You will find some books for you and to share with your children.  Happy occurrences at Brickton include many new teeth and a few new babies. Please feel free to borrow the books on these subjects as well as the CDs in our new Music library.
As you plan your holiday book purchases, keep our Manna program in mind.  Scholastic Books, Family Reading Night (Nov. 20-21), and the Brickton Book Fair in December are all good resources.  You might also consider including carefully chosen books for birthdays, milestones, family get togethers and JFBY gifts.  (Just for Being You!)
Kinderdance Update
Kinderdance is cancelled on November 12th. A make up class will be held November 19th.
Spirit Wear Orders
The deadline for Brickton Spirit Wear orders is extended until Monday, October 27th. You can find order forms in the lobby on the bulletin board.  Spirit wear is a fun way to support the school and look great doing it!

Thank You Corner
The Middle School students would like to thank Janet Contursi and Diane Grassi for training them in CPR/First Aid.  We really appreciate your help to get CPR certified!
Fond Farewell
We will be wishing Molly Arnoldt a fond farewell as she takes a position with Lutheran Social Services working on the Advancement Team.  Molly followed her son and daughter to Brickton in 2004 when she became an Advocate for Montessori Education.  Her great affinity for Brickton will remain but she will be wearing her “parent volunteer hat” with her daughter Ellie in the Middle School Program.  Molly’s last day with us will be October 31st so plan to stop by and wish her well.

A Letter From the Board
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to welcome you back to school.  Brickton’s Board of Directors has three main leadership roles:  fiduciary (oversight and assessment of the school mission and finances), strategic (planning focused on a 2-5 year time frame), and generative (developing and sharing a vision for the future of the school).

Brickton’s Head of School (HOS), Cheryl LaCost, and the Administrative Staff lead the day-to-day operations of the school. The board is not involved in decisions regarding student admission, curriculum development, or faculty and staff hiring and evaluation. The board hires and appoints the HOS, evaluates HOS performance annually, and partners with the HOS to help deliver Brickton’s mission.

Brickton’s board operates via a committee structure. There are currently seven committees:   executive, nominating, operations, marketing, gifting, finance, and community.  The board also appoints ad hoc task forces as needed to address specific topics such as technology.  These committees are chaired by a board member and comprised of parents, staff, and the HOS.

The full board meets at least five times during each school year. Typically, committees meet monthly. Their agenda is set by our current strategic plan, direction from the executive committee, and emerging needs of the school. The committees perform significant work aligned to the strategic plan and make recommendations for consideration by the entire board. All policy decisions and major expenditures are discussed and voted on by the entire board. All meetings of the full board are open to any members of the community. Please check the family calendar and the Brickton Weekly for meeting dates and times if you would like to attend.

During 2014-2015, the board will launch an effort to develop Brickton’s next strategic plan.  The strategic plan will articulate our vision and chart the path to help us reach it.  As part of this work it is critical that we obtain the feedback of a wide variety of members within our community.

If you would like to be interviewed by a member of the board in support of our strategic planning efforts or volunteer to serve on a board committee, please send me an email at bmsboardpresident@brickton.org.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you to ensure Brickton’s continued success.
Best Regards,
David Anthony
President, Board of Directors

Brickton Reads
'Tis the season to put the Boo into Books!  Lower E. students are requesting Edgar Allen Poe for their Reading Team.  This is not a good option for this age group:  far too dark and disturbing.  But we will find something that captures the spirit of the season and their keen interest! Some kids like spooky stories, and some are terrified.  All can find great reads this time of year because nearly every popular book character has a Halloween edition: Biscuit, Clifford, Curious George, Fancy Nancy, and, of course, Charlie Brown.   For the next level of readers there are Halloween chapter books:  Horrible Harry, Amelia Bedelia, the Littles, Magic Tree House and all the mystery series! The DragonBreath #5 book has a GREAT Halloween story for kids and adults.  These seasonal editions are worth your book dollars because kids can return to these books year after year. When you pull out the decorations the books reappear. You can talk about how your little "pumpkin" has grown in reading tastes!  And more importantly, when your child makes friends with a literary character, especially at an early age, it is really fun to have a visit now and then.  Halloween, Thanksgiving and all holiday books are a great investment.
For the youngest readers, now is a great time to enjoy fun-filled digraphs.  Check it out:  whch, sh and th are everywhere!  Point out these letter combinations and have your child say the single sound in witchchills, thrills and shiver.

Brickton Reads
As the first month of school transitions into the second, we all know a little better what we need to know!  Brickton's Parent Handbook is an essential guide to all things Brickton which can be found on the website or by following this link.  It is just one example of "How-To" books that liven up learning at our school.  One parent highly recommends  “How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It (Love and Stosny)”.  Megan White loves how-to books on cake baking and sewing.  The following are some “how-to” Scholastic titles for students:  How to Sing, Tomatoes to Ketchup, Fruit Salad, Building a House, Chop Simmer Season.  And for some seasonal fun:  A Monster Sandwich.  Consider a DIY (kids) Halloween:  How to Apply Costume Makeup, How to Carve Your Pumpkin or How to Make Your Own Halloween Costume. The final three are not Scholastic but can be found at local libraries.
There's always more to check out at your library!  Many students have reported exciting additions to their neighborhood libraries including Tumblebooks and Playaways.   Nate Noe is an expert on the Park Ridge library. He is one of many students who report on great fun and friendships with their children's librarians.  This can be a critical component in a child's literary life.  It can also be a GREAT support to parents. With Columbus Day approaching, perhaps your family can do some exploring - start with your Library!
