The Brickton Weekly, September 13, 2013

Getting to Know You: Each week this section will highlight one staff member and their answer to the question: How do you express your creativity?
Agnes Guerra, Children’s House Directress
I do not think of myself as a very creative person.  Recently, I was told I am creative in my work with the children, which really prompted me to think about my creativity or lack thereof.  Upon further reflection I realized that I am indeed creative in my craft.  Based on my observations of the children and the work of Maria Montessori, I create a welcoming classroom environment which calls to the children.  I create new "work" based on each child's needs.  I create for the children an opportunity to thrive.  My work with the children has also prompted me to pursue a new way to express my creativity: storytelling.
Volunteer Spotlight
Many thanks to Diane Grassi for doing a “deep clean” to our maintenance closet.  She fixed shelves, sorted, tossed, reorganized and even painted the closet.  It is a DIY masterpiece!

Give With Target
This year, Target will give money to schools all over the country for one simple act: a vote. Our school needs just 25 votes to earn a $25 donation from Target. But that's only the beginning. For each additional vote, our school will get $1 more. So please remember that, although the gesture is small, the rewards are potentially huge. Go to GiveWith.Target.com to vote for Brickton Montessori School once a week through September 21 or until Target has given away all $5 million. And please share this with your friends. Vote and see rules at GiveWith.Target.com.
Manna Is Back!
Our Manna Gift Card program resumes this week.  Purchasing Manna Gift Cards garners two important benefits for the Brickton community:

Getting to Know You: Each week this section will highlight one staff member and their answer to the question: How do you express your creativity?
Cheryl LaCost, Head of School
As a child, I enjoyed playing piano, viola, and cello, though I have not continued playing.  Now I like to sing, dance, write and crochet, but my continuing love has always been painting.  I began with oils, moved to acrylics and in recent years switched to watercolors.  I especially enjoy the challenge of planning out a piece, deciding which techniques I will try in different areas, to achieve the overall desired effect.

The Brickton Weekly, August 30, 2013

Volunteer Spotlight
Each year, as the Brickton summer camp ends and the new school year begins, the school goes through a metamorphosis.  The week before the students arrive is an intense week of set up, cleaning, classroom preparation, and painting.  The teachers and Brickton staff put in tremendous effort to ensure the school is ready for the students on the first day of school.  In addition, we can always count on volunteers to lend their time and man power to the cause.  This year was no exception.  Diane Grassi, Blair and Elisa Sarkiss, Chris Gregory and LeRoy LaCost graciously volunteered to help paint and set up.  Joe Somers and Jessie Casteel provided creative and technical assistance developing the student art gallery in the hallway.  Several families donated or loaned artwork to establish our art gallery, specifically: the Ergastolo family, Somers/Casteel family, Rowland-Weisz family, Frawley family, Drennan family, Maibuecher family, Doyle family, Arnoldt family and Barrett/LaCost family.  We appreciate your tremendous efforts to beautify the school.
Brickton Welcomes Katie Rose: Upper Elementary Co-Teacher

Thank You - Staff Appreciation Breakfast
We want to thank you for a beautiful and delicious Staff Appreciation Breakfast.  The food and gifts were wonderful, and we so appreciate parents volunteering in the classrooms, providing the opportunity to share the breakfast together as a staff.
Art Expo and Celebration Honoring Judy Beyer and Debbie Kelly

On Saturday, the Brickton community gathered in the Great Room for two great events.  We enjoyed our annual Art Expo, displaying beautiful art work from each student.  We also dedicated a peace pole in honor of former Middle School teacher, Judy Beyer, and former Head of School, Debbie Kelley.  The ceremony was led by the students and featured speeches, acknowledgements and music.  In addition to the large Peace Pole in the lobby, each classroom now has a smaller peace pole on display.  These say “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in eight different languages: English, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Italian and American Sign Language.  Click here for a link to see more pictures.
Volunteer Spotlight
The Brickton photographer, Mark Treppa, father of Middle School student, Andrew, takes wonderful pictures at many of the Community events.  Thank you, Mark, for your great pictures of the Big Leap Benefit and of the Art Expo and Peace Pole Celebration on Saturday.
Louise Borre, mother of Children’s House student, Heather, orchestrated a fundraising opportunity with Oberweis Ice Cream.  For one day during each of the last three months, Oberweis in Park Ridge donated a percentage of purchases made by Brickton community members back to Brickton.  This is a great way to donate money to Brickton while you’re doing something you do anyway.  We especially enjoyed our group visit for ice cream after the band and choral concert last week.   We’ll let everyone know how much we raised when we hear from Oberweis.  Thank you, Louise!
Food Allergy Awareness Week
This week is Food Allergy Awareness Week.  Here at Brickton, we have many students with food allergies, and we are very mindful of their dietary needs.  Many thanks to the Havens family, for providing educational posters for the classrooms and hallways and bookmarks for each student.  Take a look at the flyer below.

In addition, each purchase will also garner a discount on your student’s tuition.  Basically, you’re helping Brickton and receiving cash back for money you were already going to spend. Don’t miss this final opportunity to purchase Manna by picking up an order form outside of Dotty’s office and returning the form by Monday, May 20th at 9:00 AM.
