Montessori Education Week
Montessori Next week is Montessori Education Week (February 27th – March 5th).  It will mark 104 years of celebrating Montessori Education.  Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator, but perhaps more importantly, she was an observer of development.  Montessori developed an educational style based on a prepared environment  that fosters self-directed learning among students.  When you visit a classroom at Brickton Montessori School, you will see rooms set up with the child in mind.  All the materials are at the child’s level and available for their use.  The furniture and shelves are appropriate for the stature of the small bodies of the students.  Children will be working independently or in small groups on different work throughout the room while the directress observes the process of work, planning what to present next.  She is the observer now.

At Brickton, we feel like we celebrate Montessori Education everyday because of our strong commitment to her ideas and principles as well as our continued work with Montessori organizations including our accreditation with the American Montessori Society.  We want to continue to improve ourselves, always referring back to our mission of “working together to provide a Montessori educational experience that engages and inspires students to become life-long learners and responsible participants in our diverse global community.”  Thank you for choosing Montessori and thank you for choosing Brickton Montessori School.

Brickton’s Health Report
According to information on the Center for Disease Control website, seasonal flu activity thermometer has been increasing in Illinois and in many other states since the first of the year. At this time, one Brickton child has a confirmed influenza diagnosis and a few others have been absent due to fevers, coughs and other flu-like symptoms.

To keep any potential outbreak to a minimum, please remind your children to wash their hands frequently, cover their noses with a tissue when they sneeze and to cough into their elbows to avoid spreading germs. If your children have a fever or flu-like symptoms,  keep them home until they’ve been fever free for 24 hours and other symptoms have subsided.

Brickton Student Featured in AP News article
Aidan (Room 106) is among a number of young people featured in an Associated Press story about kids who stutter in connection with the film "The King's Speech."  This excellent film has garnered huge praise from critics, which opens the door for a broader conversation about stuttering, leading (hopefully) to a lessening of its mystery and stigma.  What an honor to have one of our students chosen to be interviewed!  Bravo to Aidan.

Click here for the story on the AP wire.  At the moment the story's title is getting more than 6,000 search results on Google; it is being carried by a number of media outlets, including ABC, NPR, the Washington Post, Forbes, Salon.com, and numerous local media outlets.
