The Brickton Weekly, January 9, 2015

Thank You Corner
Thank you to all the families who took special care of our classroom animals over winter break. The staff, students, and little creatures are very grateful.  Kudos to Diane Grassi for beautifying our school by painting walls and fixing a coat rack over the winter break.  Many thanks from the faculty and staff who received holiday gifts from parents and students. Your generosity is much appreciated!
Congratulations Karen Glab!
We are wishing a fond farewell to Karen Glab after nearly years with us here at Brickton!  Karen Glab, as some of you may know, is retiring next week after nearly 27 years of dedicated service.  Karen is one of the founding parents of Brickton and has two grown boys who were students here many years ago.  When asked about what she has enjoyed most from her years at Brickton, Karen said that it has been being able to watch students grow and change on their journey from Toddlers through Middle School.  Karen will be missed for many reasons, including her wonderful storytelling.  Thank you, Karen, for your years of service and for all that you have done for our community.  We will be honoring Karen at The Big Leap and our Art Expo in the spring.  Her last day will be Monday, January 12th, so stop by Room 103 if you’d like to visit prior to our formal events later this year.

Our winter extracurricular session will feature two new sessions…Kindergym for Boys and Children’s House Sports Club, along with tried and true favorites of Chess, Book Club, Elementary Sports Club and Kinderdance.  Follow this link for registration. Brickton Reads
Remember back at Halloween when the Lower Elementary students wanted to explore the work of Edgar Allen Poe? With the New Year comes a new adaptation of his work for young readers.  BabyLit addresses "savvy parents" who want to use this "fashionable way to introduce your toddler to the world of classic literature."  Two of their titles happen to be based on Poe stories: The Tattle-Tale Heart and Edgar Gets Ready for Bed.If any Brickton parents are familiar with the 20 BabyLit books, please contact Liz at Brickton! We are always on the lookout for books that intrigue our children.
Currently, Middle Schoolers are fascinated with The Outsiders (Hinton) and Flowers for Algernon (Keyes). Middle School Director Charles Martin is investigating titles for his TEAD READ book club.  A Life Backward (Stuart) is a contender.  Head of School Cheryl LaCost's pick of favorite picture book:Recess at 20 Below Zero (Aillaud).
Lower Elementary students have been reporting on their Season's Readings.  Elliott Natura has started a new series. Ben and Nate Noe chose the epic read:  Percy Jackson's Greek Gods.  Luke Wilcek is lovingChicken Nugget Man. SoumilSarmah has nearly completed reading the A-Z Mysteries series! Stay tuned for other book reports.
